Ralph with painting: Ralph LaFave – survived my teaching and coaching. A gifted artist.

Old Cross: Found on Wilsey Bay Lake Michigan shore by Andy Nelson, Pewter, 3”, given out by early priests. Now with Escanaba Historical Society.

Ford Cover; Inspiration for the novel. I read it when I was 10 years old. I used two names from it- Nah-ma and the long Indian name for Hunter.

Swastika; Ancient and still working for us stargazers.

Spirit Bird; Inspired by Ann Hager, kept chirping throughout the whole novel.

1800 Collage: Many items mentioned: hatchet, traps, flint and steel, Hudson Bay Knife and Blanket, smudge bundle, all on a stretched beaver hide.

Drum and Utah wall drawings; Figures dating over 2,000 years ago. Pictographs; paintings, no arms or feet, no horses. Inspiration for Ralph’s Pointillism painting inside the cave. FYI: a petroglyph is an image carved or scratched into stone, usually more modern.

2004. 62nd birthday—Social Security and 11 of the 18 lake trout caught. Over Stannard Rock—40 miles into Lake Superior. My second book starts in Lake Superior.
